What to expect

  • The study group (excluding kickoff) consists of weekly virtual meetings.
  • Start time for each meeting: 6p-8p CT each week
  • Sessions will be recorded.
  • The sessions are conducted via Zoom.
  • If the general study group is larger than six people, subgroups will be created.
  • Each week, two topics are covered from the exam.
  • Meetings will begin with general information sharing, as needed.
  • CPTD guests may lead a short 15–20-minute introduction to the topics – focused on how these topics have shaped their professional development.

Study Materials

  • No study materials are provided specifically from this study group.
  • Questions on the CPTD are pulled from real-life experiences and a variety of resources.
  • You have the option of purchasing resources from ATD, such as the Talent Development Book of Knowledge (TDBok) or the CPTD Preparation Course from ATD. Many CPTD candidates rely on the TDBoK as a key resource.
  • If purchasing ATD resources, please include the code CH7032, which will provide a credit to the Houston chapter.

Subgroups

Subgroups are self-directed based on what the group members feel will work best in preparing for the exam.
  • Social learning
  • Train the trainer
  • Sharing resources
  • Sharing experiences
  • Discussion of key concepts
  • Quizzing each other
Subgroups may want to meet F2F (live) if you are in the local Houston area. Subgroups will be determined at the orientation meeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

CAN I PARTICIPATE IF I AM NOT AN ATD MEMBER?

Yes, non-members are welcome to join the CPTD virtual study group sessions. If you can make the meetings, we are happy to have you.

I DON’T LIKE VIRTUAL MEETINGS, IS THERE A LIVE OPTION?

The study group is primarily a virtual study group. However, we realize that chapter members may live relatively close to one another and could like to meet live. Therefore, we will strive to group members based on geography so that the option for a hybrid meeting is available. Members could meet live and then call into the videoconference for the meeting and discussion.

WILL I HAVE FREE ACCESS TO THE CPTD CERTIFICATION PREPARATION COURSE TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAM AS A PARTICIPANT IN THE VIRTUAL STUDY GROUP?

No. The CPTD Certification Preparation Course is a digital resource purchased from ATD's global organization. For more information, please go here.  The CPTD Certification Preparation Course is not required to be a part of the study group.

Individuals are responsible for purchasing access to the online program if it fits their study plan. ATD does not want members of study groups to share the online content with others.

Ifyou purchase the course, please use the Houston chapter’s CHiP code, CH7032, when you checkout from the ATD Store.

Why Challenge Yourself?

  • A professional certification distinguishes you from others in the training profession.
  • A certification indicates that you are a high achiever that has strived for professional excellence.
  • The beginning of the year is the perfect time to begin the certification process!
  • If you have a passion for talent development and training, the CPTD certification demonstrates that you have mastered multiple competencies and have professionally developed.

Value of the CPTD

Build and validate your skillset.
Demonstrate your learning mindset
Increase your earning potential.

ATD capability model

In 2000, ATD introduced an updated capability model. The CPTD is based on the Association for Talent Development (ATD) capability model, which includes 22 capabilities in three domains. Preparation to take the CPTD examination requires months of study to feel comfortable on the three domains.
